Four Great Reasons to Own an AR-15 Pistol
Posted by Gun Doctor on
Short barrel rifles (SBR) and AR-15 pistols have become very popular in recent years. Federal laws make owning an SBR very onerous. The AR-15 pistol has become a great alternative for most of us who want a more powerful caliber in a compact package.
The National Firearms Act (NFA) passed in 1934 regulated short barrel rifles. The Act made it nearly impossible to own a rifle caliber firearm that has a barrel shorter than 16 inches. To own one today, you need to go through a paperwork nightmare, tie up your money for months until you get the government's blessing, pay a tax stamp (about $200 right now), and you need to carry your paperwork with you whenever you have your firearm with you. What a pain in the rear.
Ahh, but there is a way for you to own a short barrel firearm in a rifle caliber and not violate Federal laws.
You can own an AR-15 pistol (but please check with your state regulations.)
For those of you who aren't familiar, an AR-15 pistol is similar to an AR-15 rifle, but the barrel length is generally shorter (7.5 inches and 10.5 inches compared to 16 inches and greater), and does not have a buttstock. An AR-15 pistol generally has an exposed buffer tube, a padded buffer tube, or now a very popular option, an arm-brace attaching to the buffer tube.
Four Great Reasons to Consider Buying or Building an AR-15 Pistol
1) Vehicle Carry
Most states do have restrictions on carrying a loaded firearm in your vehicle. Some states are very restrictive about carrying a loaded rifle in your vehicle. Most states require a concealed carry handgun permit to do so. The AR-15 pistol is an intersting alternative to carrying a rifle in your vehicle and on your person, especially if you have your concealed carry permit.
Shorter barrels are statistically less effective than longer barrel firearms, but this is not a platform you would be looking to win a 3-Gun match. It's a compact self-defense weapon with a lot of versatility. You can use the short rail to add tactical gear such as a flashlight, optic of course, possibly night vision and thermal. This is much more versatile than a traditional rifle tactically. Item three actually helps with performance.
2) Flexibility in Caliber and Length
More and more rifle caliber barrel makers are jumping on the AR-15 pistol bandwagon. You can buy this great firearm in 5.56/.223, 300 Blackout, and the AK round (7.62x39.) CBC Industries currently offers the 5.56/.223 and 300 Blackout in 7.5 inch, 8.5 inch, and 10.5 inch barrels. A 14.5 inch barrel is also an option for those who want to reach out a little further and touch something.
3) Recent Clarifications in BATF Policy
In early 2017, the BATF has concluded and clarified attaching a stabilizing brace to a firearm with a short barrel does not make that firearm an SBR. A stabilizing brace can help the performance of your AR-15 pistol tremendously.
Stabilizing the firearm means the versatility of the firearm has improved tremendously. We've had a few customers tell us about using their AR-15 pistols for hunting. In the thick woods in boar country, a 300 Blackout AR-15 pistol could be the perfect firearm while trudging through the brush.
Quick reactions hunting small predators are perfect applications for this weapon.
So, this pistol isn't just a great truck gun.

4) Ok, let's face it, the AR-15 Pistol is just Badass and Cool
Get out and test fire one if you can (and live in a state allowing you to...) You will experience the badassedness (my special new word) of this firearm.
